Lobster Place Wholesale Valentine's Day Weekend Update 2/12/16-2/15/16 February 11 2016 Posted in

*** We will be open and making deliveries on Monday, 2/15/16. Just a heads up though that many of the trucking companies are not operating Sunday night in observance of President's Day and the Hunts Point Market will be closed as well because of the national holiday. With Valentine's Day and President's Day falling on the same weekend, we expect that product will be very tight going into Monday. We anticipate it will be a very busy weekend and strongly encourage you to order what you need for the weekend to be delivered tomorrow to ensure you get what you need. ***

Direct from the desk of our purchasers, here's the latest news in the seafood market to get you ready for the holiday weekend:

Lobster production has slowed down over the past several weeks as many fishing areas have closed until the Spring and supply has tightened up significantly. Lobster prices are up again for the coming week because of Valentine's Day but we expect costs will start to level off in the next couple weeks. All the same, we're in good shape across all sizes of lobster, with plenty of product arriving at our warehouse for the weekend.

We're in good shape on North Atlantic Groundfish with the following varieties arriving at our warehouse for the weekend: Hake and Pollock landed in Chatham, MA on F/V Carol Marie, Monkfish and Skate Wing landed in Chatham, MA on F/V Pilgrim, Norwegian Cod (Skrei), Wild Halibut, and Sterling Farmed Halibut.

Jumbo Black Bass has tightened up over the past few days and we were NOT able to track any down for tomorrow. We're going to try our luck at the market tonight but if we're not able to find any, best subs will be 3-4 LB Black Bass Bleederz ($8.95/LB), 1-2 LB Black Bass, 2-4 LB American Red Snapper, or 2-4 LB Farmed Striped Bass.

Apart from the Jumbo Black Bass, we're looking good on the Mid-Atlantic Fish options for the weekend, with a solid amount of Wild Striped Bass, 1-2 LB Black Bass, 3-4 LB Black Bass Bleederz, Golden Tilefish, Jumbo Fluke, Bluefish, and Porgies arriving at our warehouse tonight.

Over the past few weeks we've started to bring in Black Bass Bleederz from some artisan fisherman that use traditional fishing techniques to deliver fish that are above and beyond what you'll find in the market. These beauties are all rod & reel caught fish that were landed in Point Pleasant, NJ on F/V Shear Water. They're bled-out fish and are absolutely pristine. $8.95/LB Gross Weight

We're in good shape on Southern Fish for the weekend, with plenty of American Red Snapper, Red Grouper, Fresh Mahi Mahi, Spanish Mackerel, Catfish, Mako Shark, and Open Blue Farmed Cobia coming in tonight and available for delivery tomorrow.

Salmon prices are still high as farms in Canada and Europe are between harvest cycles and supply has tightened up significantly. We expect prices will remain strong for the next few weeks until the next generation of fish reach market size.

Our Organic King Salmon supplier was a bit ambitious and sent us too much fish this morning so we're running a special through the weekend to move out the product. $7.95/LB

We're looking good on Salmon and Trout options for the weekend, with fresh shipments of Aurora Salmon, Organic King Salmon, Atlantic Salmon, Scottish Salmon, Brook Trout, Red Meat Irish Trout, and Arctic Char coming in tonight and available for delivery tomorrow.

Let's talk about Oysters... If you need oysters for the weekend, we strongly encourage you to order what you need for the weekend to be delivered tomorrow. The oysters we have coming in tonight are all we'll have for the weekend and as soon as they're gone, that's all she wrote. Plan ahead and get your oyster orders in ASAP!!

We're looking good on Fresh Crabmeat options for the weekend, with a solid amount of Fresh Maine All Leg (Peekytoe), Fresh Jonah Combo, Fresh Jonah Cocktail Claws, Fresh Blue Lump, and Fresh Blue Jumbo Lump arriving at our warehouse tonight.

Production on Blue Crabs in Indonesia has improved over the past few months and we've started receiving shipments of Pasteurized Blue Lump and Pasteurized Blue Jumbo Lump Crabmeat over the past several weeks. It's a fantastic product and a good option for anyone looking for something that's not quite as expensive as the Fresh Blue Crabmeat coming out of Louisiana.

In case you missed the newsletter we sent out last week, we're running a contest for a chance to win a trip to Panama. The Top (2) Customers to buy the most Open Blue Farmed Cobia between 2/8/16-4/30/16 will win an all expenses paid trip to Panama to visit the fish!! If you have any questions about the contest please let us know. If you'd like more info about the fish please click on this link: Open Blue Cobia

We're getting a small shot of Fresh Spanish Dover Sole 400-600g and Fresh Spanish Turbot 400-600g for anyone looking for something special for their V-day menu. But get your orders in early because these are sure to move quickly!!

We're also getting some Live Diver Scallops and Razor Clams in tonight from Wellfleet, MA.

Also, we'll have a decent amount of California Uni and Maine Uni coming in tonight and available for delivery tomorrow.

Specialty Items that we'll have on hand for the weekend include Live Diver Scallops, Razor Clams, Maine Uni, Vana (Frozen Maine Uni Tongues), California Uni, Fresh Spanish Dover Sole, Fresh Spanish Turbot, Fresh Marinated Escargot (Snail Meat), and Tuna Bottarga.

Also looking good for the weekend are Dry Sea Scallops, Peruvian Bay Scallops, Fresh Rock Shrimp, Fresh North Carolina 16/20 Head-off Shrimp, Tuna, Swordfish, Fresh Squid, Branzino, Dorade, and Live Oysters

Lobster Place Wholesale Weekend Update 12/4/15-12/7/15 December 03 2015 Posted in

Here's the latest news from our seafood purchasers to get you ready for the weekend:

Lobster production remains consistent and prices are DOWN for the coming week. Although prices are relatively low for the moment, they'll start creeping up over the next few weeks as demand will continue to increase as we get closer to the holidays. In the meantime, we're looking good on all sizes of lobster with plenty of product arriving at our warehouse for the weekend.

Availability on Wild Halibut has been spotty lately as the season is coming to a close and we will NOT have any available for the weekend. Not to worry though, we have plenty of Sterling Farmed Halibut coming in and available as a substitute. If you're not familiar with Sterling Halibut, here's a brief rundown abut the product... The fish are grown in the cold, clear, deep fjords of Ryfylke in the southwestern part of Norway. The ideal environmental conditions in this area produce an excellent quality Halibut that is high in Omega 3 fatty acids and rich in vitamins and proteins. It's a versatile fish that is perfect for grilling, frying, poaching, or baking.

With the exception of Wild Halibut, we're in good shape on North Atlantic Groundfish with the following varieties arriving for the weekend... Pollock and Hake landed in Chatham, MA on F/V Constance Sea, Monkfish and Skate Wing landed in Chatham, MA on F/V Pilgrim, Day-boat Icelandic Cod, and Sterling Farmed Halibut.

We're looking good across the board on Mid-Atlantic Fish with a solid amount of Wild Striped Bass, Black Bass, Blackfish, Golden Tilefish, Jumbo Fluke, Bluefish, and Porgies coming in tonight and available for delivery this weekend.

We're also in good shape on Southern Fish with plenty of American Red Snapper, Red Grouper, Fresh Mahi Mahi, Spanish Mackerel, and Catfish coming in tonight and available for delivery tomorrow.

We also got in some beautiful Mako Shark this morning that was landed off the coast of Florida. $5.90/LB NET Weight.

We're in good shape on Salmon and Trout for the weekend with fresh shipments of Organic King Salmon, Aurora Salmon, Atlantic Salmon, Scottish Salmon, Organic Fjord Steelhead, Red Meat Irish Trout, Brook Trout, and Arctic Char coming in tonight and available for delivery tomorrow.

We're also looking good on Fresh Crabmeat with a solid amount of Fresh Maine All Leg (Peekytoe), Fresh Jonah Combo, Fresh Jonah Cocktail Claws, Fresh Blue Lump, and Fresh Blue Jumbo Lump arriving at our warehouse tonight.

We received an update from our friends at Hollander & DeKoning earlier this week regarding repairs to their facility following the unfortunate fire that destroyed their operations about two weeks ago. They expect to be back online and harvesting mussels again early next week and hope to have a fresh shipment to us by next weekend. In the meantime, we'll have plenty of PEI and Chatham Blue Mussels available as substitutes for the weekend.

Just a heads up that we won't be receiving our shipment of Fresh Hamachi  until late tomorrow morning after the AM trucks have left, so if you need some for tomorrow it will be going out on the afternoon truck.

We've had a heavy run on California Uni the past couple of days and product is petty limited and probably will NOT be available for weekend. Not to worry though, we have plenty of Maine Uni coming in and available as a substitute.

Also, our caviar supplier sent us a bit too much Trout Roe today so we're running a special this weekend to move out the product. $14/PC (100g/Jar). Take advantage of this great price while you can!!

Specialty Items that we'll have on hand for the weekend include Razor Clams, Live Diver Scallops, Maine Uni, Vana (frozen Maine Uni tongues), Fresh Spanish Dover Sole, Fresh Spanish Turbot, Fresh Portuguese Sardines, and Tuna Bottarga.

Also looking good for the weekend are Dry Sea Scallops, Steamer Clams, Red Mullet, Fresh Rock Shrimp, Fresh Georgia 16/20 Head-off Shrimp, Tuna, Swordfish, Fresh Squid, Branzino, Dorade, and Live Oysters (see lineup above).

Lobster Place Wholesale Weekend Update 10/16/15-10/19/15 October 16 2015 Posted in

Here's the latest news from our seafood purchasers to get you ready for the weekend:
We updated our costs this afternoon and current pricing will be in effect from 10/16/15-10/22/15.
The Lobster market remains tight but prices are holding steady and have even gone DOWN on some sizes for the coming week. We're in good shape on all sizes, with plenty of lobsters making their way to our warehouse for delivery this weekend.
We're looking good across the board on North Atlantic Groundfish with plenty of Icelandic Cod, Pollock, Hake, Wild Halibut, Monkfish, and Skate Wing arriving at our warehouse for the weekend.
We're in good shape on Mid-Atlantic Fish with plenty of Wild Striped Bass, Black Bass, Golden Tilefish, Bluefish, Jumbo Fluke, Boston Mackerel, and Porgies coming in tonight and available for delivery this weekend. Landings on Golden Tilefish and Black Bass have improved over the past several days but the best deal coming out of the Mid-Atlantic right now is Wild Striped Bass. Quotas on Wild Striped Bass will definitely start to run up soon so take advantage of the low price while you can!
We'll also be getting a small shot of Atlantic John Dory in tonight that was caught off the coast of Maryland.
We're looking good on Southern Fish for the weekend as well with a solid shot of American Red Snapper, Red Grouper, Fresh Mahi, Spanish Mackerel, and Catfish scheduled to arrive at our warehouse tonight and available for delivery tomorrow. There is a lot of Fresh Mahi being landed down south and the product we've been getting in has been looking spectacular. Even better, prices are wayDOWN on Fresh Mahi and it's one of the best deals in the market right now!
We also got a small shot of Mako Shark in this morning that was caught off the coast of Florida.
We're in good shape on Salmon and Trout with fresh shipments of Wild King Salmon, Wild Coho Salmon, Organic King Salmon, Aurora Salmon, Atlantic Salmon, Scottish Salmon, Organic Fjord Steelhead, Brook Trout, Loch Etive Red Meat Trout, and Arctic Charcoming in tonight and available for delivery this weekend.
We're looking good on Fresh Crabmeat with a solid amount of Fresh Maine All Leg (Peekytoe), Fresh Jonah Combo, Fresh Jonah Cocktail Claws, Fresh Blue Lump, andFresh Blue Jumbo Lump arriving tonight and available for delivery tomorrow.
We started bringing in Vana (broken Uni tongues) recently from Maine and we've been getting some really positive feedback on the product. Vana is a great option for anyone using Uni for sauces, butters, etc. It's sold frozen in 1 LB packs at $16.50/LB. Give it a try and let us know what you think!
Availability on Fresh Dry Peruvian Bay Scallops continues to be spotty and we willNOT have any available for the weekend. Not to worry though, we have plenty of IQF 60-80 CT Bay Scallops on hand and available as a sub until we're able to get more of the fresh product in.
Availability on Steamer Clams has been a bit inconsistent lately but things have gotten back on track over the past few days and we'll havePLENTY on hand for delivery this weekend.
Minced Clams will NOT be available for the weekend. Our supplier has been having some production problems due to lack of raw materials. Best sub for the weekend will beClam Strips.
Razor Clams will NOT be available for the weekend as the tides are still breaking too high up north making it impossible to dig for the clams. The situation should improve by next week when negative tides start to break along the coast and the clammers are able to get back out and harvest razor clams.

2lb and larger hard shell lobsters extremely hard to come by right now.  We have 1.75 pounders available for those of you looking for a larger lobster.  The prices of the limited amounts of 2's and 3's we are seeing continue to climb.

Jumbo Black Sea Bass landings are few and quantities are extremely low, driving prices through the roof.  There are 1-2lb fish available.  A more reasonable option is Wild Striped Bass.  New York boats are finally landing stripers and the price is good, these are a great value right now!  Other items that are down in price are Fresh Mahi Mahi and Jumbo Fluke.

Red Snapper is very tight right now, we are only seeing a few landings per day.

With respect to Ground Fish, looks like we're in another week of limited Pollock.  We are seeing fish but quantities are down compared to usual availability. Prices are way up, rendering Hake the better option.

Ocean Watch — Tuesday, September 23 September 23 2014 Posted in

Tuna prices are down this week.  We are seeing beautiful local product caught off of Maine in the Gulf Stream.  Our pristine #1 Tunas are bright red with a nice fat content.  But don't forget about Tuna 2+.  If you are not using tuna for sushi, a nice cut of beautiful 2+ tuna loin may be just right for your application.

Ground fish varieties, such as Cod, Hake, Pollock, Skate Wing, and Monkfish Tails, are notorious for fluctuating on a daily basis, in terms of price and availability.  While we are seeing a good amount of Large Cod and fair amounts of Large Hake,Pollock remains tight and expensive.  The price has held firm
and product has been limited through the beginning of the week.  I will have a better idea of the weekend Pollock outlook by tomorrow.  If you are willing to take Cod or Hake instead of Pollock, I recommend doing so.

Mid-Atlantic fish is looking good.  We have plenty of Jumbo Fluke and the price is down.  We are also finally seeing a good amount of Wild Striped Bass, some of which are locally landed right here in New York!  Large and Jumbo Black Sea Basscontinue to be a problem.  Fish is limited and extremely expensive.  We are getting limited product but we recommend you take Red Snapper as an alternative.

Fish out of the South has remained fairly stable.  Red Grouper is in good supply.  We are seeing a slight decrease in landings of Domestic American Red Snapper this week but I expect us to be able to source enough 2-4 and 4-6 pound fish for the remainder of the week and weekend.  Fresh Mahi Mahi is now available.

Ocean Watch — Tuesday, September 16 September 16 2014 Posted in

Salmon Specials:
2-3lb Atlantic Salmon Fillets (cleaned), Skin-ON @ $5.50/lb
2-3lb Atlantic Salmon Fillets (cleaned), Skin-OFF @ $5.65/lb

4-5lb Pre-cut Chilean Salmon Fillets, Skin-ON, D-Trimmed, PBO @ $5.95/lb
These pre-cut Salmon fillets are Pin-bone-out and D-Trimmed, which gives you a high meat yield.

Wild Striped Bass and Black Sea Bass are both limited and expensive so expect shortages and price increases here for the next week or so.  Red Grouper and Tile Fish are suitable subs for Wild Striped Bass and Red Snapper is an excellent sub for Black Sea Bass.

Fresh Mahi is now available!  Slowly but surely, Mahi Mahi out of Guatemala has begun to trickle back into the market.  Mahi had completely dried up over the summer so we are very pleased to see the return of this treasured and flavorful fish.

Hard-shell lobsters continue to be extremely expensive.  We are bringing in firm-shell quarters and halves for those you who do not necessarily need a hard-shell lobster and would like a more economical option.

Ocean Watch — Tuesday, September 9th September 09 2014 Posted in

Wellfleet Select Oysters at $0.85 each!
Grown and harvested in the estuaries of Wellfleet Harbor, these large oysters offer a medium-high salinity and a crisp finish.  3-3.5 inches in length, this is a steal!

Fresh Pre-cut D-trimmed Chilean Salmon Fillets now available!
For those of you looking for a more economically friendly salmon option, we are currently offering 3-4lb Pre-cut Chilean Salmon Fillets.  These fillets are D-trimmed, which is considered the highest meat-yielding trim.  In other words...you are getting almost all meat and no waste!

Quinault Coho Salmon is now available!
The Wild King Salmon season is coming to a close.  The fish are swimming into the estuaries to mate causing the quality of meat to be sacrificed.  For this reason, we will no longer be bringing in the Alaskan Head-on Troll Kings.  However when one door closes another always opens, and so is the way with fresh fish! The Quinault River Coho Salmon season has begun, and we expect to see strong runs of this species through October.  These special coho salmon are fished along the central coast of the Quinault River by members of the Quinault Indian Nation, which includes the Quinault Indians as well as five other coastal tribes.  All fish are closely monitored, bled and iced immediately after retrieval, and processed at a plant located only minutes away from the river, right on the reservation!  The fish we have in the house right now are 6-9lb each.  We may have larger 9lb + fish available next week.  For information about this product please reach out to your salesman or email us at sales@lobsterplace.com.

Massachusetts Wild Striped Bass Season has officially ended!
The ending of the Wild Striped Bass season in Massachusetts was announced on Sunday night.  While New York and the Mid-Atlantic are open, there have not been many landings and most of the stripers we were seeing were coming from Massachusetts area.  Expect fish to be very limited to unavailable this week.  We will keep you posted!

HARD SHELL LOBSTERS DISCLAIMER:
Hard Shell Lobsters, particularly chix, quarters and halves, are currently very difficult to procure and very expensive.  Closures in Canada and exports to Asia are the main culprits for the shortage.  We can expect product to be tight for the next month, at least.  In response to this shortage, we are bringing in FIRM SHELL LOBSTERS.  Firm Shell lobsters will be automatically substituted for any hard shell orders that cannot be filled.  If you would rather we not substitute your hard shells with firm shells, please let us know by reaching out to your sales rep or emailing us at sales@lobsterplace.com.

HARD SHELL LOBSTERS ARE EXTREMELY LIMITED!

Red Snapper is very limited as not a lot of fish are being landed.  We do have beautiful 2-4 American Reds coming in tomorrow, but we will be out of 1-2 and
4-6 pounders.  Black Sea Bass is an excellent substitute!

The Tuna market has tightened up this week.  It appears that boats are landing a lot of small fish, so loins could be a bit smaller than what you are used to.

Don't forget about our beautiful Fjord Steelhead Ocean Trout from Norway.   This is an excellent fish for both raw and cooked applications.  The meat is fatty and flavorful, very similar to that of the Aurora Salmon.

Ocean Watch — Tuesday, August 26 August 26 2014 Posted in

Cod has become very limited and difficult to procure.  Expect to see possible price increases here towards the end of the week.  Supply is good on other Ground Fish, such as Hake, Pollock, Monkfish, and Skate.

Domestic American Red Snappers could be tight for tomorrow but we will be seeing more, fresh product in, coming out of Apalachicola, Florida for Thursday sales.  Joining these American Reds for the ride up to the Bronx are some beautiful Golden Tile Fish and Red Grouper...all domestic and all as fresh as can be.

The lobster market has firmed up considerably. Canada is closed for hard shells until October 15th.  Consequently, there is a great demand for domestic hard shells and not a whole lot of supply.  Prices have gone up and will continue to increase.  We are seeing firm shell lobsters that are remarkably less expensive than their hard shell counterparts.

For a less expensive alternative to domestic, Louisiana Blue Crab meat, we are bringing in a fresh lump and jumbo lump product out of Colombia.  This is a quality crab meat, and just like the domestic product, is harvested from the Blue crab.  Inquire with your sales rep.

Fresh Mahi Mahi continues to be limited and extremely expensive.  The CO treated frozen Mahi fillets are an excellent alternative for the time being.
