Fluke
(Pleuronectidae)

Market Names: Summer Flounder

Is It Wild or Farmed? Fluke is wild caught.

Where is it fished? Fluke is a migratory species that can be found throughout the North Atlantic from  the Gulf of Mexico to Nova Scotia.  The Fluke The Lobster Place procures is landed primarily from Cape Cod, MA to Cape Hatteras, NC.

How is it fished? Fluke is fished primarily through the use of demersal otter trawls and dredges.

Where does The Lobster Place Source it? The Lobster Place procures Fluke from dealers like Southern Connection Seafood, RM and Sons, and Altantic Coast Seafood.

Is it sustainable? Fluke populations are considered below healthy, sustainable limits. However, with strict fishing quotas currently in effect, the industry is witnessing a rebuilding of its population with the expectation of it being fully rebuilt by January 1, 2013.  Despite this improvement, there are still concerns with some Flounder fishing techniques such as bottom trawling which may result by-catch of other marine species and damage to the ocean floor.  Fishery management techniques such as increasing mesh net sizes to limit by-catch have been successfully employed.
