Herring Salad
(Clupeidae)

Is It Wild or Farmed? Herring is wild caught.

Where is it fished? Herring are found in both the eastern and western halves of the North Atlantic Ocean.  In the U.S. Herring are found from Labrador to Cape Hatteras, NC.

How is it fished? The species is fished commercially primarily through the use of purse seines and trawls.

Where does The Lobster Place Source it? The Lobster Place procures Herring in Wine Sauce and Herring in Cream Sauce from Acme Smoked Fish.

Is it sustainable?  Atlantic herring populations have recovered substantially from the very low levels witnessed in the 1970’s, and no overfishing is believed to be occurring.  However, herring is in very high demand, both for human consumption, and by the marine ecosystem as an important food source for marine mammals, seabirds, and predatory fish, potentially taxing the herring population.
