Organic King Salmon
(Salmonidae)

Is It Wild or Farmed?  Organic King Salmon is farm raised.

Where is it farmed? Organic King Salmon farms are primarily found in British Columbia and New Zealand.

How is it farmed?  Organic King Salmon are farmed in open ocean net pens.

Where does The Lobster Place Source it? The Lobster Place procures Organic King Salmon from vendors like Clean Fish.

Is it sustainable? Organic king salmon are farmed in net pens along the coast of the Pacific Northwest and New Zealand.  Net pens can have adverse environmental impacts when they are mismanaged. Specifically, dense populations of fish in a pen can cause pollution of surrounding waters due to fish waste and farmed fish escapes can impact the viability of nearby wild stocks.

While King Salmon is marketed as "organic", there is no official government certfication of “organically” farmed fish. Farmed "organic" king salmon are generally raised without the use of hormones, antibiotics or stimulants and thus have been given the "organic" label.  Despite the organic feed, feed ratios(the amount of dry feed required to produce one unit of wet fish in fish farms, typically expressed in pounds) of farmed salmon are approximately 3:1.
