Prince Edward Island Mussels
(Mytilidae)

Is It Wild or Farmed?  Most of the Mussels consumed are farmed and we sell a farmed product at The Lobster Place.

Where is it farmed?  Mussels are farmed throught the Northeast on the Atlantic coast with most of the the farming concentrated on Prince Edward Island.

How is it farmed?  Mussels are grown on ropes suspended in mid water.

Where does The Lobster Place Source it? The Lobster Place sources Mussels from distributors like JP's Shellfish.

Is it sustainable?  Like other bivalves, farming methods for Mussels are environmentally sound.  Mussels do not rely on fishmeal or fish oil as part of their diet, rarely have diseases making chemicals or antibiotics unnecessary, and help to improve the surrounding water quality by cleaning tiny particles and debris.  Most farmed Mussels are grown on ropes suspended in mid water, making seafloor dredging unnecessary.
