Smoked Peppered Bluefish
(Pomatomidae)

Is It Wild or Farmed? Bluefish is wild caught.

Where is it fished? Bluefish is a migratory species that can be found throughout the Gulf of Mexico as well as on the East Coast of the United States.

How is it fished? According to NOAA, recreational landings account for the majority of the Bluefish catch. The species is fished commercially primarily through the use of hook and line and gillnets.

Where does The Lobster Place Source it? The Lobster Place procures Smoked and Peppered Bluefish from Acme Smoked Fish.

Is it sustainable? Bluefish population levels are considered to be high due to good fisheries management and high population growth over the last few decades.  There is a slight concern about by-catch of other marine mammals through the use of gillnets.  However, gillnets used in Bluefish fishing are generally small resulting in lower marine mammal by-catch rates.  The majority of Bluefish are caught using hook and line techniques, which has relatively low levels of associated by-catch.
