White Shrimp
(Palaemonidae)

Is It Wild or Farmed?  U-10 Shrimp is wild caught, while 26-30 and 21-25 Shrimp is farmed raised.

Where is it farmed/Where is it caught?  Shrimp is farmed and found wild all around the world.  The U-10 Shrimp that The Lobster Place sells is caught in Mexico.  The 26-30 Shrimp are farmed in Costa Rica, and the 21-25 Shrimp are farmed in Mexico.

How is it farmed/How is it Caught? Wild shrimp are caught through the use of trawls, while farmed shrimp are farmed in open pond systems.

Where does The Lobster Place Source it? The Lobster Place sources U-10 and 21-25 White Shrimp from distributors like Waldman Seafood, and 26-30 White Shrimp from distributors like Cleanfish.

Is it sustainable? Little is known about international wild shrimp populations, however because shrimp are short lived and reproduce rapidly, there is not much concern about overfishing.  Wild shrimp are generally caught with trawl nets, which have high rates of by-catch.

One cause of concern regarding imported farmed shrimp is the destruction of coastal mangrove forests when building shrimp farms.  Mangroves are an important habitat for a wide range of fish, plants, and birds, and their loss pose a potential risk to these species.  The 21-25 and 26-30 White Shirmp sold at The Lobster Place do not contain any horomones, antibiotics or additives.
