Yellowfin Tuna
(Scombridae)

Market Names: Ahi

Is It Wild or Farmed? Yellowfin Tuna is wild caught.

Where is it fished? Yellowfin Tuna is a migratory species that can be found in tropical and sub-tropical waters. The Yellowfin Tuna The Lobster Place procures is landed throughout the world.

How is it fished?  Yellowfin Tuna is fished commercially primarily through the use of longlines, handlines, rod and reel gear, and purse seines.

Where does The Lobster Place Source it? The Lobster Place procures and grades whole Yellowfin and Bigeye tunas from importer/dealers like Great Oceans, Seafarers, South Bay, and Beacon Fish.

Is it sustainable? Both Yellowfin and Bigeye Tuna are believed to be near target population levels, and overfishing is not occurring in either stock.  Along with good fisheries management (domestically and internationally), Yellowfin and Bigeye mature quickly and release millions of eggs annually, helping to keep their stocks at sustainable levels.  While poll and troll caught Tuna is preferred, purse seining and long line fishing methods are prevalent and a cause for concern due to relatively higher levels of associated by-catch of marine life.
