Place the clam in the palm of your hand so the hinge lies at the base of your index finger.
Place the blade of your clam knife in the seam just above the C-shaped notch nxet to the hinge and press inward.
Draw the tip of the clam knife into the clam and run it along the inside of the top shell to cut the abductor muscle.
Using your hand, remove the top shell from the hinge and discard.
Run the blade of the knife under the meat to cut the abductor muscle from the bottom shell.
Serve and enjoy immediately.
